| Its difficult to describe who the GuleWamkulu are They are like a cultural secret society Noone knows who the GuleWamkulu are they disguise themselves with costumes and their faces are never seen As a child I was told that if you ever see who a GuleWamkulu is you will be killed whispers in the school yard They perform traditional dances at ceremonies and funerals in the villages and Ive been told that they are responsible for driving away evil spirits They are appointed by village chiefs and therefore must be obeyed when a GuleWamkulu asks you for money you give it to him immediately
GuleWamkulus are very mysterious and everyone seems to tell different stories about who they are and what they do Some Gules seem terrifying and evil but others are almost friendly
These Gules definately frightened me but were nicer than their weapons portray They stopped our car on the highway but then they danced while I took pictures demanded money and let us go |
